About the Speaker:  Dr. Louis Cataldie is a renowned addictionologist, who practices in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has extensive clinical and administrative experience in addiction medicine and has worked in that field for over 30 years.  Dr. Cataldie has developed and served as medical director of several successful recovery programs for both adults and adolescents. His current addictionology practice includes providing detoxification, evaluation and treatment on both an inpatient and outpatient basis for people wishing to recover from the brain disease of addiction.

 Dr. Cataldie received his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans.  He was a consultant to the White House on adolescent inhalant abuse during the Reagan years.  He previously served as Medical Director for the Office of Addictive Disorders for the State of Louisiana. In 2005, he was appointed Medical Examiner for the State of Louisiana and the Incident Commander of the Family Assistance Center for Hurricane Katrina. He was in charge of the recovery and identification of deceased victims of Katrina and for finding the location of over 26,000 missing/displaced persons. Upon completion of that mission, he returned to the field of addiction medicine. 

Dr. Cataldie is a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He has served as Medical Director of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing and is currently an addictionologist consultant for the Board’s Recovering Nurse Program. He has served as  Medical Director of the Physician’s Health Foundation of Louisiana.  He has served as Louisiana State Medical Society Governor’s appointee to the Addictive Disorders Resource Authority and to the Child Death Investigation Review Board.

Researchers are beginning to determine that those on the autism spectrum are not immune from developing an addictive disorder and that the two conditions may even partially share etiology. This one hour Lunch & Learn will offer a current understanding of similarities and possible links between Autism Spectrum Disorder and so-called OCD-spectrum disorders, particularly addictive disorders. The material will deal with diagnostic criteria for this comorbidity and potential adaptations needed in treatment, such as less reliance on group therapy toward lower-impact, individual care. Parents and family members of those with ASD are welcome to attend and share their experiences, as well as professional educators and counselors who serve the ASD population.   

Moderator: Dr. Kent Dean is Director of Clinical Development at CADA (the Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse of NWLA) and Director of CADA’s School of Addiction and Behavioral Health. Kent has been a counselor, teacher, and administrator for over forty years. He has been on faculties of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Southern University in New Orleans, and University of Louisiana at Monroe; and he has presented at local, state, and national conferences.

Parent Speaker: Susan Reeks is an Autism Activist and the parent of a teenager with ASD. Susan will share her experiences navigating autism services in North Louisiana and share stories from other parents. Susan is also CADA's Director of Marketing & Development.
